Another game another set points. On this road trip out of 6 possible points the Flyers have found a way to get 5 out 6. Yesterday’s game though impressed me like no other because not 1 but 2 top six forwards were out while playing with only 10 forwards and 7 D-men.
1st Period
The 1st was pretty back and fourth with plenty of shots but not much in goals. But early on the Flyers would lose Nolan Patrick who would appear to take. Puck to the side of the head right in between the helmet and ear. He would be helped off the ice with a towel held to his head looking bloody but wouldn’t be to bad of an injury he received stitches and is considered Day-Day. Only 4 or so minutes later the Flyers would strike first at 8:21 into the period with a nice little snap shot to the stick side coming from Travis Konecny with the assists coming from Gudas who gets his 100th career point and Robert Hagg. 6 minutes later at 14:59 into the period Travis Sanheim would take a shot off the face off and then the puck would sit in the slot for what seemed like forever till Sanheim would eventually over work an islanders forward to take a quick snap shot that would go right by Lehner with the assist going to Giroux making it 2-0. The rest of the period would go by uneventful and end
2nd period
The action wouldn’t take long to kick back up with another goal only 3:18 into the 2nd period with a goal by Scott Laughton who would chip away on two shots in close with the assist coming from Raffl. Not much would happe. Besides some a few shots and blocked shots as Brian Elliot would look good in the net for the most part. The Flyers would go on to score another one at 15:41 into the 2nd with the coal coming off the skate of Coots with assists coming from Lindblom and Giroux. With that goal it be 4-0 with nothing happening ending the 2nd.
3rd Period
The Third period the Flyers would play a lot of keep away just running time down with a lot of dump ins and chip ins. Although within the first two minutes the Islanders Eberle would lay a hit on Konecny behind the net into the boards with his elbow hitting the back of TK’s head and TK didn’t take kindly to hit giving eberle a shove into the boards followed by a cross check that would eventually get called but before that they would drop the gloves and put on a pretty good show as both would land a few good shots on each other before the linesmen would step in and break it up. The rest of the period would go by with one more penalty by Laughton who would get called for high sticking but nothing would come of it. But the shut out would be spoiled Adam Pelech with assists going to Andrew Ladd and Josh Bailey. As the rest of the game would go by uneventful and the Flyers would win 4-1.
Standings
With yesterday’s win the islanders drop to second in the metro division and the capitals move into first. Also the flyers move 3 points behind the blue jackets and only 5 behind Canadians and penguins and only 6 points out of 3rd in the metro division chasing the hurricanes. It’s crazy to think with only 3 more wins the flyers could be sitting pretty in 3rd place in the metro division. I don’t think any of us would think that that would’ve been possible about a month and half ago but with 16 games left with the home and away split evenly and 11 of the games being against eastern Conference playoff contenders the flyers are more then capable of controlling there playoff hopes. With the next game being against the Caps we shall see how this playoff chase continues to play out.
